My Methods
The value of a clear goal & a method that works for you
When somebody decides to start seeing a psychologist it’s usual to begin with what’s caused you to take that step right now.
It could be something very tangible like a painful event in your life or something in your own behavior you are unhappy with.
One can need both to ventilate frustration & grieve what’s happened, what’s been lost, what you hoped for & your own limitation. Sometimes a goal can be more abstract & elusive. It’s worthwhile to try & formulate as clearly as possible, with your counsellor´s help a goal for your therapy at the beginning.
Contextualisation
During therapy I ask now & then if we are talking about the right thing, what´s really important & even if some change is occurring. These recurrent questions are often called contextualization & can be important for those who can get a bit lost when they open up.
Affects & feelings
We human beings all have affects or feelings. These direct our focus. They tell us what´s important for me & drive us to express for those around us.
How we express our feeling or affects is heavily influenced which experiences we´ve had in relationships with others.
Conversations with a therapist create a real possibility to come closer to our deepest feelings.
Mentalisation
Sometimes focusing on our ability to understand other people´s feelings & hopes can be a valuable way of making progress with our own feelings. This is sometimes called mentalization.
Mentalisation based therapy or MBT has, in my experience been a valuable for some people.
Dreams
For some, whom I´ve met inner processes express themselves in dreams, inner images & stories. These things can be a door to change & development.
In my experience this focus has been of great value for some people.
